Default Legal age to sign into a contract?

I heard somewhere that you have to be at least 18 years of age to sign into a legal contract... Any contract... Renting an appartment, TV/internet, electricity, car payments, a Blockbuster membership ect.

Is it true?

Depends really, There's plenty of under-18's with recording contracts.

Story short:
A) You intend to uphold the contract:
Just go there and try, they should know.
You are looking for ways out of the contract:
I am not asking why you got in first place, however; ask your parents.

I think contract law differs from country to country. Even from state to state.

Generally, minors are taken to not be legally responsible. You can't get a 5yr old to sign their bike over and expect it to stand up in court.

No I'm looking for an appartment. I am planning on getting good credit and keeping it there.

I just don't want to try and get an appartment and be shot down because of age issues... Or get the appartment and find out I can't get internet or TV because of my age.

I'm sure I could get my parents to cosign if anything required it.

I wish there was a big book of Canadian laws on a website governed by... Well the government...

Yeah, basically your rents will have to sign everything for you.

There's no law saying that you have to sign a contract to rent a flat. If you know the landlord, you can come to any agreement. But if they want you to sign a contract, you will need to be of a sensible age. No agency or professional landlord in their right mind would let someone legally irresponsible sign a contract.

I moved out at 17 and it was a pain in the arse. I couldn't get a video-card in the shop downstairs and I couldn't even get a library card without my parents permission.

It was gash.

There's no way you're going to have good credit before you're old enough to sign a contract. Your credit doesn't start good, it starts at a medium level and builds up as you take out credit and pay it back every month.

Working on it, It's just taking too long.

Also about the credit thing: Yeah no duh. I meant I was going to try and make payments and not f*ck up so it doesn't go down. Really I don't know how you could misinterpret what I said.

Oh and Zippy... You credit starts at non-existant... Which is where I'm at now.

This is how it works, if you're under the age of 18 your parents can sign the contract for you since that have power of attorney. This means they would have control of all your assets as well, if the bank finds out they are spending said assets frivolously then the assets are put in a trust fund which means you can't touch it until you reach the age decided by the judge.

This includes the apartment.
