I have a brother mfc-240 or something like that and I use an CIS (continuous ink system). It basically takes the cartridges and hooks them up to external ink wells. I know the brother mfc-240 has fax functions and it's a pretty good overall printer. I spent about $100 on the printer (refurbed) and ink system total, and I've gone through 3 sheet packets over the past couple of years and haven't run out of ink yet because there's like 250 ml of ink the wells whereas most cartridges have 10-25 ml or something. I've probably saved at least $150 a year in ink cartridges alone so the system has paid for itself over and I haven't even refilled the wells yet.
Anyway, if you're looking to save money on ink you should look into these systems, they very cheap and the cost of refilling them is ridiculously cheap. And they fit in a variety of printers (although you should find the CISS first then buy the printer that goes to it).
