No knock against the game, as I still play. But I think we now see where the saturation point is for an MMO. The game is now quite old, so for it to have seen growth all this time is pretty remarkable. My sense is that the game will spike again when the new expansion pack comes out, but will start to gradually decline. |

I think that a big reason for decline can be saturation. It can also be initial investment. I mean once Cataclysm comes out you're talking about an investment of $100+ in order to just get in the game. That's ridiculous! Especially for a game that I pay for monthly.
You're probably right, they might start to decline. However, they should have enough built up in the coffers now to move towards a model where it's free to download, but you must pay to play. I think this type of model would bring in a ton of new customers and will revitalize the franchise. Whatever way they go, taking a crack at a new pricing model might be the best way to get new players into the game.
