I've been racking my brain lately. I have a school provided copy of Windows 7 Professional and a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium that came with my laptop. I've been switching between the two of them thinking "okay, this time I'll stick to one", just to realize I miss certain features in one that the other is lacking.
Onto what I really dislike about Windows 7. The taskbar. I gave it a few weeks and it grew on me, I love not having to rummage through the taskbar to find my music player or the correct Word document or instance of VB.NET I'm working on since they are always in the same spot, but whoevers idea it was to combine a dock, the start menu, notification tray icons, a clock and constantly opening and closing un-pinned applications should be shot. If I want to include all of my favorite programs conveniently a click away, I can't, there just isn't room. If I want Windows Explorer, Firefox, foobar2000, the Microsoft Office suite, CCleaner, Google Earth, Visual Studio, uTorrent, Media Player Classic, HWMonitor (a temperature monitor), mIRC, Nero, a game or two, and who knows what else I may choose to use at any given time, I can't. With a dock easily accessable at the bottom of the screen, I'm done navigating through the start menu or back to the desktop to open my commonly used programs. I should take a moment to mention I'm really OCD about my desktop. I don't want a single icon on it anymore. And on top of all that, with some multiplayer games I'm forced to pin the updater to the taskbar for convenient launching. Why is this a problem? Well, launching the updater is okay, but once the game actually loads it takes up yet another spot on the taskbar (since the updater and game itself are seperate programs). It wouldn't be a big deal, if my taskbar already weren't a bit cluttered with my day to day applications and any non-pinned ones I happen to have opened. That said, I really WANT to like Windows 7. It's much, much faster than Windows Vista, probably easier for my relatively crappy laptop to run and it looks better (including the taskbar, though functionally it could stand to be improved). Newer versions of older applications and newer applications will start to be built around Windows 7, and slowly abandon the old style of Windows Vista and XP (thus leaving them unsupported or lacking in functionality). It supports pretty much every piece of hardware I throw at it without me needing to download third party drivers (though I still do from time to time since it isn't perfect) and let's face it, with it's success, schools will probably start switching to it, companies will, and I enjoy not being left behind on older, increasingly obsolete (and never really all that great in the first place) operating systems like Vista. I guess what I want out if this, is for someone to give me some redeeming qualities about this cluttered mess at the bottom of my screen that some people enjoy calling the Windows 7 taskbar. Something where I can go "you know what, they're right, maybe this isn't such a ill designed piece of crap afterall". ![]() Go nuts! Last edited by Dreakon; 03-12-2010 at 08:51 PM. |

Somebody who thinks windows should work flawlessy out of the box again.
Taskbar: there's an option in the properties named 'task bar icons' change it and they won't combine anymore. The tray icon can be adjusted as well. Enable the option: 'always show icons and notifications on the task bar' and it'll show all icons. If you want certain applications to be shown, use the dropdown menu next to what you want and select 'show icons and notifications'. Little note: I'm using dutch version so names might be a little off due to my translation.

It desperately needs the ability to group multiple different programs. For example the Microsoft Office suite. Who wants to take up 3 different spots if a person regularly uses Word, Excel and Access? Give us a way to put them all together so they can be opened and accessed (I'm aware of programs like 7stacks, it's good for launching programs but the problem of them taking up multiple spots needlessly is still there) from one convenient icon. And not just Microsoft Office, but various Adobe applications, games and their updaters, series of games (combine all of the Fallout series into one icon, or all of the Elder Scrolls, or all of the Diablos), etc. Last edited by Dreakon; 03-12-2010 at 09:08 PM. |
