Default First Time Player

I am starting MS for the first time and am wondering what class to play.

I think I'm going to go with one of the explorers I just don't know what yet.

Probably not a warrior or a thief, but maybe a mage, bowman, or pirate.

What are the pros/cons of each?

I will probably roll on the new server. Dunno what my name will be yet.

What are the most/least played jobs?

How does the game treat beginners?

Have you though about playing Knights of Cygnus?

They are a really powerful class with the best PvE through lvl 1-120!

but you CAN'T BOSS AT ALL.

This is were explorers shine the best at.

So really Cygnus > Explorers for short term

but Explorers > Cygnus at the long run.

The class part is all up to you.

honestly

In that case, turn around and find something else.

No really, the game doesn't treat beginners nicely, the market is crazy, people are crazy, the gms are crazy.... everyone is crazy in the game.

That's because you started three years ago, back when everything wasn't sky high in terms of damage/market standards.

Anyway, if you can successfully play the game without giving much of a damn about damage/while adapting really fast to the market you'll do fine; I'd recommend the first option. The game treats beginners nicely, since there are quests and minidungeons that help you out, especially as a Cygnus. You'll start to enjoy early mid-game (around level 35) since all the nice PQs (party quests, like instances) start at that level.

As for classes...

Warriors - Able to tank, generally slow until higher levels, strictly close range, highest HP, lowest MP

Bowmen - Longest range out of all classes, second slowest class branch, able to freeze things as a Sniper (level 70+ crossbowman) and shoot MACHINE GUN ARROWZ as a Bowmaster (level 120+ hunter). HP is second lowest.

Magicians - Lowest HP, array of elemental attacks, most efficient training at level 120+ for all classes within the category, very easy to maintain, lowest HP, highest MP; fastest class with Teleport (a movement skill) at levels 30 - 70, second fastest at 70+

Thieves - Has both a ranged (Assassins) and close ranged (Bandits) variant. Second fastest class from 30 - 70, Assassins at 70+ become the fastest with their skill Flash Jump. Ties bowmen for second lowest HP in the game. Extremely high avoidability, rarely gets hit at levels 120+. Arguably a very expensive class. Most mobile class. Bandits at level 120+ require precision to be able to control efficiently.

Pirates - Brawler subclass has the second highest HP. Also offers a ranged (Gunslinger) and close ranged (Brawler) variant. Gunslingers eventually do the highest single target damage in the game by level 120+. Brawlers are arguably the most efficient crowd control class in the game also by level 120+.

Cygnus and their counterparts are exactly the same.

Pretty much listen to this, It's basically everything you need to know on Maplestory.

Now, all you need is the time and dedication to get there.
