No problem, however just remember that even the construction jobs and helping people over seas like in Africa with health problems (clinics) you are required to pay about $3000 plus your airline ticket. The best route you can take is going via a church group if you have one. I have a friend who just graduated Uni a quarter after me and is going over to Haiti with some of his church members to help for 3 months. He still had to pay for the ticket (but his band did a fund raiser for him) and I believe the church is paying the rest.
As well remember that teaching English in most countries that it is a second language it is a business which means you are there for the companies to make money. The exceptions are countries like France, Spain etc and if you go through the US government like the JET program. However I don't want to make it sound like it is impossible, there are some groups who will send you for free you just have to do research. One great suggestion which the first I spoke of above is doing after Haiti, is he is going to volunteer as a firefighter in Eastern Washington for 6 months as well. That is another approach you could take as it is very helpful to the people in that area and most times you are in a different area meeting new people (I know it's not a different country though).

Ok do not go in the summer time, it will be death defying hot and plus depending where you are, its also monsoon season. Go during anytime but then. There is alot of areas you can go to. Each area is very different from the other. I reccommend you go to either Mumbai, Kolkata(Calcutta), New Delhi/Delhi area, Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Kerala. I haven't been to the mountain areas but i heard good things because thats himalayan territory so check that out as well. I recommend you to get a Lonely Planet guide to India because its really descriptive and useful.

What I recommend is you can either do Northern India or Southern India.
Northern India you can go to Delhi, Calcutta, Varanasi (most holy city of India) and can see the Dalai Lama if you go far enough. Southern India you got Mumbai which from what I heard is much more westernized (never went there) seeing beautiful woman in western cloths is common. I would suggest first looking at lonelyplanet.com first as it gives great information. And if you are actually going to be in a different country such as SE asia first, then you can buy the lonely planet book for India for 15% the real cost (which is what I did).
