I've heard nothing but bad things about this one from the people at work, reviewers, and the little voice in my head. They all seem to point out how poor the character of Nancy is, how good Freddy is, and how there's jumpscares all over the place.
I have about zero interest in seeing it. To be fair though, my desire to see it was thrown out the window when I read that Craven was not attached to the project and that they were making Freddy a "more serious" character.

Hmm this version of Nightmare on Elm Street looks great.
Far better then the others in my opinion. Can't wait to watch it!

As for the point of him being more series as a negative, why? He's a paedophile murder turned serial killer that operates in kids' dreams. That's what he is. The problem came when kids started dressing as him for Halloween. He NEEDS to be made more serious, he's not some kind of loveable rogue. The reason these movies will no longer have an effect is not only because they've been done before, but because no kids care about that nowadays. Those movies were made to deter a generation away from promiscuous sex and recreational drug use, a still unknown quantity at that time. Now, who's gonna go see it? Some teenage dudes or chicks that are in a sexual relationship, or have at least had sex by 16, and live in a culture where drug use is nowhere near as feared or reviled. Jaws didn't just provide jump scares, for example. It actually created, however unfair and incorrect, a fear of sharks that has spanned generations. There are people today who won't swim in the ocean because of that movie. The scene where the first woman gets killed still remains, to me, one of the most terrifying scenes committed to film. You can watch it now and still appreciate how that put the fear of God into people. The pitch black night and the dark ocean, her feeling a tug on her leg and panicking with nobody to help, then being dragged underwater and devoured. Horror movies just don't have that impact now. It's all Saw movies every Halloween. |
