Internet connections will always get faster. Ways of digitally distributing bits of data, copyrighted or not, will always get more efficient. Ways of protecting what people download will only continue to become more protected (passworded multi-rar's, proxies/ip blockers, data encryption before and after transfer, streaming, etc). People will always, always, always download shit for free, as long as the internet exists. This lawsuit won't do anything other than get a lot of money out of a lot of people that probably wouldn't have watched the movie anyways, and perhaps some people that maybe didn't even like it.
Not to say those people shouldn't be reprimanded in some way, but personally I'd start just fining anyone legitimately caught downloading a couple hundred bucks (and maybe even spending a night or two in your local jail if possible lol)... it won't kill them but it'd definately get the point across. I'd think twice about doing it if I lost $300 and 2 days of my life for downloading Jennifer's Body just to see how much it sucked and it doesn't have that nasty "these companies/people really are scumbags" aftertaste of sucking thousands of dollars out of ordinary people. Plus, you probably wouldn't get much more than that, if even that much, physically shoplifting the DVD from a store. The only thing, honestly, that has probably lowered the number of people illegally downloading music at least, is iTunes. Reasonable prices for individual songs people want downloaded conveniently and converted to common formats at the click of a button. Not sure if/how they could do this for movies, but yeah. iTunes has pretty much become a staple nowadays for bands to get on, and I don't see it running out of business due to torrenting or whatever. Kind of like Steam as well, for games, to an extent. Wouldn't it be funny if they aren't actually suing 5000 people and just sent out this as a scare tactic? You have to admit, it'd probably cost them less money and time and probably get the same job done. Odds are even if it were true we'd never hear from any of these 5000 people.
