XP dose not have that problem, as it maximum ram consuption on idle is 234MB and it can be even lower.
XP is faster then vista in many ways and supports all programs/games.

I recommend TinyXP Rev 9 / torrent sites, its the fastest OS reconfigured to maximize performance.
vista is ram dependant: it is, but not 8gb, i have 4gb installed (of which 3gb useable) and it runs smooth at hell

64bit vista is the problem for pristontale? you should know 64bit xp is ecen worse, in fact ive been able to play gta2 on vista without tweaking
i havent been able to play 2 games on vista so far, and that was CoD2 (menu, no problems, ingame a black screen) and rollercoaster tycoon 1 (screen froze on start menu, it did run further though) that was when i just got vista, over 18 months ago so it should be fixed by now

also some post i made a while back covering most of the vista is bad arguments

if anyone takes that point of fabiann that vista will wipe your hdd upon shutdown of vista, ive contacted a someone who repaired pcs/hardware and gives lessons now, he said he didnt hear of that problem yet
