Back in the day, i started my entire gaming career on MUDS. what are muds you say?
imagine a world thats made completely out of text. every room is described by text, skills and spells and combat are all text based. There are no graphics. Back when i played a game called Legends of Terris, we had spontaneous rp events, where drama was created and resolved through the use of /emote. (ie, Auri flourishes her hands and two fireballs appear, hovering and twisting in an inverse pattern around her body). This gave rise to some of the most innovative PVP that i've ever experienced, where having a general skillset (ie, your class) leads to different skills you can create. The catch? you have limitations as a human, (your not a god, you can't kill 10 people with the wave of your hand), but the bounds of your own creativity are unlimited. If it's within your characters skill, your able to manipulate their skills using whatever method you can think of. I want to start this type of 'PVP' RPG here on onrpg. RULES, REGULATIONS, and EXPLANATIONS: 1) First post has to have your character, with a general background. Any sort is acceptable, although keeping it realistic is a must. 2) Everyone starts at 'level 1', where they have basic spells and skills. Through your own imagination, gaining levels will grant you 'skill slots' where you can create your own (once again, realistic) skills. (Example: Studying 'alchemy' will grant you a bonus to intelligence, and therefore allow you to create potions that manipulate your own body, or your opponent. Similarly, if you choose to study 'poison' and 'alchemy', your able to create poisons to attach to blades, shoot, toss at the enemy, use to set traps, etc. etc.) 3) To stop from becoming overpowered, each level grants you 30 'build points'. Skills will have 10 levels- Apprentice, journeyman, etc. etc. You can choose which skills you want, but are limited by the amount of build points you have. Since each skill level takes increasing amount of skill points, you can either choose to become a grand master in one skill, or diversify yourself. 4) As for spells (and attacks), each is based off of the skill you choose. If, you level holy magic (apprentice), you'll have an opportunity to create a beginner level skill- whether it be a straight forward attack skill like Holy light (shoots a cross in a straight line), or something like heal, you can decide. -as an addon to this, notice how the level 1 skill was straight forward. Your just an apprentice- unable to do anything fancy to your skills yet, such as curving or adding other effects. As you increase the amount of skill you have in Holy magic, you'll be able to add effects to your skills. PVP ITSELF I've yet to think of how to work this on a forum, although i believe it'll be through the use of a sort of ongoing strife between different factions. When you create your character, you'll be assigned a faction: Damascans, Frostfall, Goldshire. Damascans are the people of steel, Frostfall are the people of the cold, and goldshire are the people of wealth and academics. These will help shape your skills and background (for you RPGers, although you can feel free to get creative! Coming from one background doesn't necessarily mean you must stay from there, and doesn't mean your skills are restricted to your natural heritage!) This is where i need assistance- Background for the three cities and their ongoing strife would be a good element for RPG. As for the PVP itself- it'll work in a couple ways. 1) First, RP until you meet someone of the opposing faction. One post gives you a chance to PVE, describing your skill and what your character learns from it- describe the experience. (And by doing so, show us your skills and spells!). 2)Subsequent players in the same faction have a chance to either meet up with someone, form an alliance, PVE, etc. etc. Your post can be completely independant, or based off of another's. Keep in mind- your able to learn skills from people who are similarly minded as you. Instead of straight 'pve' grinding, if your able to formulate a relationship with a mentor, they might be able to teach you too! (If, they are skilled enough!) 3) After every post, you'll be given the chance to 'encounter' someone. (If, you see they are in the same area your in, and decide to attack them!) 4) Beware! sneak attacks and traps can be set!. Allude to them in your 'PVE' post. (IE, sneaking around in the shadows, auri takes out her dual knives and coats them with a mysterious liquid. She quickly grins and spots her target- a lone (blank). After this is done, send a PM to the person you choose to attack with the title as 'ENCOUNTER!'. The poster has every chance to read over your PVE post and decide his or her plan of action- To keep it fair, the encountee has the first move. However, if one is hiding in shadows, it would be impossible for the encountee to know that the attacker is there- they could sense something, but not fully know where it's coming from. This is being realistic- you do not have godly senses, you do not have every sense of mind. Also: keeping your PVE posts vague, but detailed enough to explain your moves, is crucial. If you allude to something that can be done, then it's legitimate. if you pull something out of nowhere, the people will declare the fight invalid and the winner goes to the 'non cheater'. 5) After fights are finished (one outsmarts the other. be realistic people- if you go for an attack and your opponent has the 'dodge' skill, it's likely that they will choose to attempt an evasion of your attack. Since we have PVE posts, you can have a good idea what skillset your opponent has. If they choose to dodge left and counterstrike with a dagger to your kidney, you can either choose to shift your body and be off balance or take the hit. Keep in mind, your character gets tired, just as in real life. Battles can not go on forever.), The entire fight will be posted and judged in this post- peers will vote upon if it's fair or not, and experience will be rewarded as such. 6) Each PM will be one 'turn'. You have one 'move'. Each pm is expected to be a couple lines only. It's not your say to determine what your opponent does. But hopefully we have a good playerbase and these fights will be creative and quick. 7) Experience from PVP will be determined by the amount of skill and creativity. Winners get a base amount (determined by how skilled of a player they are up against), and the losers also get a certain amount (they fought, therefore they get experience too). Winners however, will be able to get a bonus pool of exp from me depending on how creative they are! the more creative and innovative, the more experience i am willing to grant! 8) Experience from monsters will be decided by me in subsequent posts about areas and experience. As the game gets further on, i will create new areas that you can explore and new monsters to fight. How you deal with the monsters i throw at you will be your task. Character Template Name: Physical Description: Faction NOTE: you will not be able to choose this- i will be assigning factions in order to keep a balance).Skills: (Name, Skill level) Spells: (Name, Skill level, brief description) Any other relevant information- Experience: Available Build points: To start- i will be hosting a game of 12 players, 4 in each faction. I myself will be playing and acting as GM of the game. If someone wants to assist me with the background information of the land and the factions, it would be greatly appreciated. Once we have all 12 (or however many we get) players, i will begin the game. if more interest is accumulated, i will subsequently open up new positions. You will start at level 1. All your information will be expected to be on your entry page. NOTE: Before you start every PVE post, you MUST have these few things- 1) a link to your character post 2) Current EXP, and current BP After your PVE post, the amount of EXP gained will vary depending on YOUR imagination- if you take on three trolls as a level 1, you will surely be killed. If you say you win, without some incredibly clever tactic, (ie, i run in hacking and slashing and manage to chop off every head of the troll and kill 3 in one swipe), you will be punished by EXP and BP reductions. However, using the predetermined EXP amounts, you'll be able to calculate how much exp you earn. If you took on two trolls, led one into a trap, and killed both of them cleverly, you'll be able to say i earned this base amount (two trolls worth, 30 exp each so 60 total), plus a bonus of (monster exp / 10 x amount of mobs fought) So. If your interested, please post your character template and a demonstration of your RPG skills.
