hey guys, I was wondering if anyone would be up for organizing some sort of cool tournament playing RTS games? (kinda self-explanatory, really, looking at the title)
I'd like to take a measure of what people would be interested in playing, first, obviously, or if this interests anyone at all. I had two games in mind, but feel free to suggest your own, and I'll add them to the poll) 1) Rome: Total War (Gamespy arcade (unless if anyone can find another way to play it) - dirt cheap. - kinda old, still looks good though imo. - will run on almost any computer. - easy to pick up and play at least sorta well at. - emphasis is placed almost entirely on strategy. no building, very few hotkeys, and, while matches are short, it's not as frantic as some more traditional rtses. you choose your armies before the battle. - large number of factions (especially if you tweak the game a tiny bit to unlock the unplayable factions) - unfortunately was designed for single player mostly. the online community came up with a set of rules to stop people using really cheap-*** strategies: No artillery o No elephants o Max 6 of same unit card o Max 8 medium to long ranged foot missiles (not including skirmishers or head hurlers) o Max 8 cavalry units/mounted units o Max 2 Horse Archers/Chariot Archers o Max 2 berserkers o Horse archers/ chariot archers = Cavalry o Javelin cavalry are not regarded as horse archers but as cavalry 2) Starcraft II (Battle.net) - much easier to pick up and play then starcraft I, mostly due to um, whatchacallem, tooltips? the things that pop up when you hover over something. yeah the original starcraft didn't have those, which I think is lame. - still really hard to pick up and play though, partly because people are goddamn obsessed with this game, and partly because a big part of winning is being extremely, extremely fast (ie. memorized hotkeys and build orders) - pretty scalable. probably won't run on every computer though. - can look waaay prettier than rome: total war, though. - you build buildings and units and harvest resources. - way more expensive. - probably more unique units than rome: total war. - usually longer matches than Rome: Total War. - better online service. - more diversity in the factions than Rome: Total War. edit: that sounds really biased, upon reflection lol. if anyone else wants to try to describe why starcraft II is good, feel free :]

Screw SC2.
Warhammer Dawn Of War Series ![]() Same as SC2 just more diversity. Not the second ones where you can't build up bases.

edit: you guys who suggested things and then posted "not really", you realize you can't vote again, right? second edit: I'll try to add your votes, if not your names, to the options you suggested, anyway :/ third edit: do you guys know if age of empires II will run on windows 7?

Yeah Age works on windows 7, its gotta run as admin, there's also some minor issues but going though Google I found that they are fixable.
If we end up doing Age, I have a site where we can launch games as a collective, so no worries trying to do go through LAN, IP's and such. |
