Give Lost Saga a try.

Go to www.ogplanet.com and click on Lost Saga. You can find some gameplay videos on youtube by just typing in lost saga.

Best open world persistent games I played were Asheron's Call and Planetside.

I still haven't found any MMOs that have gripped me like those two did. It's a tough order to fill.
