After all, the vast majority of online free independently developed games tend to be MMORPGs and as a result there is a lot of competition out there (as well as great deal of mediocrity). This makes it hard to stand out from the crowd and avoid the trap of developing yet another slightly tweaked clone of some game you've been playing.

I think it would be interesting and revealing to hear what drives various developers to create their own MMORPG.
To be honest, I think above all else, besides monetary compensation, a chance to build up a portfolio and to showcase your ideas, is it's almost a way to cheat without actually cheating.

It's a way to become that player without sinking your time almost uselessly into another MMO made by someone else. In somone else's MMO you're always going to be bound by some rules someone else has made, no matter how many items/levels/money you get. In an MMO you make, you're always set apart from other players; you're always going to be better than them, no matter how much they grind, or trade, or whatever. They're simply a player, whereas you're a "god", and can shape the world in whatever way you want, after all, you created it.

Maybe I'm just a narcissistic power hungry maniac, but that's always held a certain appeal to me.
