All the mains have pretty decent uses in PVE and PVP, so you can't really go wrong. Since Atlantica puts you in control of 9 characters, I guarantee you that whatever main you pick you will be able to put together an effective PVE and PVP formation. Although from my experiences, Sword mains seem to be pretty uncommon in PVP, so you might want to steer away from that.
I personally play a Cannon Main and I'm having fun with it. Staff and musician mains seem to both be really popular right now though.
As for formation, for the beginning levels you don't really have much of a choice as to what mercs you use. It doesn't really matter, so you can just do what most people do and get one of each. (Sword, Spear, Gunner/Archer, then later on add a Shaman at level 10 and a Monk at level 20). Beyond that I would really need to know what main you pick in order to recommend a formation.
