I have had a Amazon Kindle for a bit over a year now and I will attest to it being wonderful. I don't advise the Nook 2 as it has a screen like an IPad and thus battery life that isn't as good. I generally read mine for 2 hours a day (while going to and from work) and have not charged it in over a month, this means I can simply leave it in my backpack and never think about it.
As well 90% of my books are torrents however you cannot directly download torrents, the Kindle is one of the best IMO as it supports many different formats (most don't). As well there are simple converters that will convert a pdf, txt, microsoft read me file etc into a kindle format that works perfectly. I would 100% suggest a kindle especially when they are only $99 now I think. As well for a kindle, you can have people gift you books (from amazon) but if your mum doesn't want to buy them I am unsure what to do for any physical e-reader.
