I was able to decipher "Man" using google so.. I just assume maintenance.

It says something like "Its maintenance period, please wait until its done"

I dunno what you're doing wrong. Maybe your inventory is full [on non-usable tab or usable tab]. And no, you don't have to equip an item of that kind to open a jar.
