Sorry for the month long bump, just thought this topic was interesting and wanted to voice my opinion.
Anyways, for me, it is one reason and one sub reason.
Reason:
Most other MMOs out there suck, and I, as a gamer, know what I and other gamers want. We want something that isn't going to be boring, that isn't going to suck. Something that has just the right amount of features and types of features, and is done in the way that we see fit.
Something that the players decide on instead of the companies for once. For example, my game which uses a free 2D engine, [which I have done little to nothing with yet, am still mainly brainstorming, as the engine I am using is still in beta and not ready yet to make a full game] is going to be a semi-sandbox game... with neat skills, several classes, but all skills can be used by all classes... its just how you build your char...
As well, if you truely want to be a mmo developer as a career and not just for fun or as a side job, starting out with a simple cheap or free engine and a 1-10 man team is the way to go! It does help the 'portfolio' for later on as Mr. Mod up there said.
SubReason:
I like being in control... being the one to do what needs to be done without being told what/when/how to do it...being able to help players, to be looked up to..
