Well, I maintain that if you want a game to be different, it has to be different in a lot of respects. Making a small change in game mechanics doesn't change anything except...well, the game mechanics. It won't make something different enough to avoid being called a "clone."
If you took Call of Duty 4 and added double jump, and made it super important for getting around on every map, and you had to be a double jump master to do well in the game, I still wouldn't believe you if you told me it was a different game. I'd just call it CoD4 with Double Jump.

if a similar game you change some mechanics and feacture you can have a diferent game and make he own path in the 2d side scroller market
if this fail you gonna have the felling of you played that game before
that happen to most of people who tryed perfet world games
