I know it was a joke for you but some people actually take stuff like that seriously. I had an argument with a guy who believed it. He thought the magnetic poles would shift when a large meteor came by. Which I told him was BS and gave proof.
Also I will probably go see that movie anyway since I love a movie with explosions and crap. Is Michael Bay producing this movie or something? lol!

Well, a lot of people who read those scientific evidences they tend to either overexaggerate it too much, or misinterpret the information.
Like so: it is fact that the our Earth's magnetic poles are shifting. The will complete this act by 2012. This is to protect the Earth from harmful UV rays. The end of the Mayan calendar could be connected to this because of the method they used to make their calendar in the first place. They saw the position of stars and the sun in the sky and recorded it every year, month, and day.
Now, because of these poles shifting, there may be a higher rate of activeness with volcanic activity, earthquake activity, and chances of tsunamis occurring is greater. People can overexaggerate this and say that countries may be covered in lava, countries will be ruined because of the extreme earthquakes, and countries that have oceans and seas on their barriers will experience tsunamis worse than what we've seen in 2004.
