The NHS pays for any glasses I get, I tend to get designer ones because they look better and the cost isn't that much given that the NHS pays for most of it. I'm due a new pair sooner or later, these are getting somewhat old.
I'd suggest that you try any glasses before you buy them.
Also, I prefer glasses to contacts. =x
