The lens is a foriegn object, it's not natural for the body to have. The tooth, while being misplaced, can have blood vessels and tissues grown from the body more easily then a foriegn object and would have less of a fail rate. Either way, the object would have to be implanted in the eye, and having less of a fail rate is better anyway you look at it. That's the main reason behind the tooth, it can bond more easily with the eye and is a safer route then just simply implanting the lens alone in the eye.
