Dunno about anyone else, but for, say, critical analytical language arts papers we were taught to do "cause-effect" thesis statements. And they usually go at the end of your introduction paragraph and pretty much describe what you're gonna be talking about in the essay. The cause-effect part is like "the author shows this and that about this character and therefore shows the readers that this and that".
That's all I know. Any other essays we weren't taught specifically how to do.
