I think they should use a fighting system similar to Toribash, but using weapons and such, and when you hit a fatal point on the opposite character, they react in a way that puts them to a disadvantage for the fight.

(ie; Your shin gets broken, therefore your mobility is limited, aswell as your effectiveness with that leg.)

Then eventually, there's just the blow that causes your character to die, like an axe to the face.
