Because it's a compulsory subject and involves more than teaching you about how to read and how to comprehend text. THAT part is taught to you, and hopefully mastered, at a younger age.

You don't get to decide what "better off" is for anyone besides yourself.
You were better off reading novels because YOU got more out of them. That does not factually mean that there is more to them objectively. Being longer and full of more text does not mean a thing on a content-based level.
I get more enjoyment out of an issue of Watchmen than I do out of The Da Vinci Code, for example.
Yet, I get more out of Ulysses than I do out of most comics. It depends on the content and the person reading it.

Then take your inexperience elsewhere. Stop judging such a vast and intricate medium when you know next to nothing about it.
