Default Microsoft near $8.5 billion deal for Skype

Source

Quote:
Microsoft Corp is close to buying Web video conferencing service Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion including debt, a source familiar with the situation said, underscoring the technology giant's growing ambition to plug a hole in its mobile offerings.

Buying money-losing Skype would have no immediate impact on Microsoft's finances, but would make clear its intention to compete with rivals such as Apple Inc and Google Inc.
Microsoft is putting more energy and resources into the mobile and Internet arenas as the importance of the personal computers underpinning its Windows and Office franchise appears to be under threat.

Microsoft's deal with Skype is expected to be announced as early as Tuesday morning, the source said. The source declined to be named because the talks are not public. Microsoft and Skype declined comment.
Quote:
Last year, Skype had about 124 million connected users every month by the end of June. But 8.1 million were paying customers, using Skype to make calls to traditional phones at discounted rates.
Interesting. What do you all think? I'm taking it with a grain of salt right now.

Didn't eBay buy Skype only to turn around and say "Uh... What do we do now?".

I'm hoping Microsoft can really do something with it. The program is really dire right now.

It can only get better. With each update it became more "fat" and CPU wh0ring compared to older version. A lot of unneeded features.

It would've been nice if they let me choose which Skype version to use but I can't even do that. So I am forced to get these completely retarded updates rather than using 2.0 which was brilliant.

I think the downfall was starting from 4.0
3.0 was OK, not the best, not the worst.

I can just imagine how 8.5 billion dollars is just pocket change for Microsoft.
