I think his main question was if it was legal to randomly check someones info even though it is not work related, which is illegal(in the U.S.)

Accessing confidential information outside the workplace for personal use can be illegal depending on what info is used. Even then if the person is caught they can be sued and get jail time.

Alright, you guys seem to have helped me 3 full pages, so let me explain.
My friends grandma just moved into a house near the centrum of the city, like 1 minute walking to the shops and such, she's quite elder, she can go to the shops and buy herself food and things like that, but she can't do any hard work, and the house was in bad condition, now, my friend and his father and mother have been reconstructing the house for about two months, this took so long because they all have jobs and couldn't be there all the time, now the neighbor works at the community office or how you would call it, (where they make ID's and give you your drivers license and such), now recently my friends father or mother had been talking to the neighbor and he went all like ''I know all the information about you, I can check it anytime and I already did'' and along those lines, I wanted to be there to ask him what his reason exactly was to check my friends family information, because when I was there, the father himself went to the two neighbors to say the coming weeks there might be some noise and such. And that kinda sums it up. |

I would just let it go. It doesn't sound like the neighbor is threatening your family or anything. If you are really concerned you should find out where he works and then go complain to the neighbor's boss. But if you do that you'll be on the neighbor's shit list and you probably don't want to make trouble for your friend's grandma.
Yeah it was retarded for the neighbor to say that, but if there's a lesson you can learn from grade school it's this: just because you can tell on someone doesn't mean it's a good idea. |
