Default Need help choosing a college laptop

Hey guys, I've been researching a bunch of different laptops and I came up with a decent list that can play games pretty well while being able to surf the internet and run word efficiently at a good price. If anyone would like to help me slim down my choices or even recommend a better laptop in the 600-900 price range I would be really grateful.

This since I'm such an Asus fanboy

But when you say play games, what games do you mean. Also, any pc should be able to handle MS word :/

Most of those laptops are pretty overkill if your main concern is college stuff :V.

True, my main concern is basically college, but I also want to have a good laptop to game on when I'm on my breaks from school since I don't have a good desktop or laptop at home. My current laptop has terrible specs and can barely run Counter Strike 1.6 (which is what i mostly play due to the fact that I can't really play new games that come out). Basically, I just want a laptop that will be safe enough for me to play some new MMOs that come out on low-medium (medium preferred) settings perfectly while I'm on break, as well as running CS 1.6 perfectly, though I'm sure any of the above laptops can run 1.6 without a problem.

I slimmed my choices down between:

Since your recommendation is definitely better than my other two, but also a bit more expensive, I'm just curious which laptop you would pick between the Toshiba Satellite and the Acer Aspire, and then I'll decide based on how much money I want to spend.

Pick the Asus one.

You'll benefit in the long run from having 6GB of ram.
HDD is a double edged sword: it's faster, which means better performance overall, but your battery won't last as long. You'd need to have it plugged in when gaming either way.

I'd ignore the 2nd laptop/link, as the CPU is from the previous generation. While still good, it still looks like nothing compared to current gen CPUs.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely end up purchasing the Asus laptop, I'm sure in the long run it will be worth the extra bit of money. I've never had any experience with higher-end laptops or computers. I've heard of overclocking and things like that, should I know about anything beforehand in order to maximize the performance?

Overclocking on laptops is either made impossible or suicide.

The only thing you should focus on is the power options of your laptop. Power saver for classes and high performance for gaming.
Perhaps tweaking the advanced settings a bit, such as when to turn off the display etc.

sounds awesome. I'll let you guys know how it goes, I'm sure it'll run way 100 times better than my current laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 1.4ghz, 1gb ram, nvidia geforce 8400m gs).
