I am looking at buying a car for myself and I really love the look of the older VW's. I can get a decent shape '92 VW jetta for next to nothing(300$), the only problem being is that is has 278k miles on it(It is not diesel). Does anyone have any experience with cars and would like to chime in?

At the end of the day, it's how the car has been maintained over the years. If the car has been run and maintained well then you can expect quite a few miles out of them.
I would say though, despite not knowing too much about that engine/transmission that that is getting very near the end of it's life. I'm not sure what regulations you have there for the saftey of the vehical but here in NZ we have to get warrent of fitness (WoF) tests done every 6 months. If this is the same there and it looks as if it will pass the next few then yeah, I'd probably get it. Remeber though. Cars aren't cheap. |

278k miles? for me personally that would be instantly passed on even if it was only 100 dollars, it will be more of a hassle then its worth tbh.
it also really depends what the cars been used for, if it was mostly used for highway travel then 200k+ miles is actually not much worse then a car with 40k that was used to drive around town my personal rule is nothing over 120k, unless i know the owner and know it has been well maintained then ill take a look at it. but other then that cant really help you from here. |

I mean I can afford a higher priced car but love the older styled cars, though it just isn't really viable as a regular commuter.

just follow the key rule to car shopping, dont buy the first thing you see, take your time and search around, theres always a really nice gem that's hidden. no one buys a vehicle thinking "oh ill just drive it until it breaks down" i mean i guess if thats what your looking for go ahead and take it but other then that i would say pass on it and keep shopping. |

Do you know anyone that is mechanically minded? The only reason I ask is because if you have the money then you could just swap the engine out for one that has done less miles. That is an option if you want the older chasis and low miles. I wouldn't reccomend getting it done through a local mechanic though as you'd be paying through the .... Despite it seeming like a large job, you could do it in a day easy.
You don't happen to have any more info on the car at all do you? |
