Cool The lamb raised alongside a springer spaniel who thinks he's a canine

Being an animal lover in general, this is a cute story!

YouTube Video

A sheep that was rescued as a lamb and brought up with a springer spaniel is now convinced he is a sheep dog.

Jack is so sure he is a canine he fetches sticks, wears a collar and a lead, jumps up on his hind legs and even tries to bark.

The six-month-old pet doesn't even recognise his own species and tries to herd sheep when he is put in the field with the rest of the flock.

Owners Alison Sinstadt, 48, and her partner Simon Sherwin, 50, were stunned when the Lleyn sheep was befriended by their nine-year-old springer spaniel Jessie.

Mother-of-two Alison, who runs Adderley Wharf Farm and a shop near Market Drayton, Shropshire, said: "Jack was born one of three lambs, which is quite rare.

"He was very small and we decided to bring him in the house and put the hair drier on him and forced him to drink milk.

"It ended up that he took to the dog and they now sleep together in a dog basket in the porch.

"Jack follows Jessie wherever she goes and even tries to copy her when she barks.

"He makes this strange half baa, half woof noise which everyone finds hilarious."

Bizarrely, when Jack is with the rest of the 60 sheep on the farm he tries to herd them into one corner of the field.

Alison said: "Jack doesn't even recognise sheep as his own kind because he tries to herd them up when he's in a field with them.

"He even fetches sticks and jumps up on his hind legs like a dog. When we take Jessie for a walk on the lead Jack nuzzles me until I put him on a lead too.

"He is so sure he is a dog and we treat him like one. Jessie is a pet but she lives mostly outside. Jack follows her wherever she goes.

"When Jessie comes in the house, Jack often comes in with him but we don't encourage it

"The only thing which Jack does which is remotely sheep-like is eat grass. Apart from that he's just like a dog."

Sheep veterinary expert David Howell said: "Sheep are more intelligent than some people think and they are very capable of learned behaviour.

"Most sheep do revert to their natural characteristics if they are not brought up in their natural surroundings but clearly Jack prefers life as a dog."

I always find it odd how animals can be socialised. Makes me think they may be a little more similar to us as we tend to think.

Personally i find this both hilarious and cute. I'll take a sheep that acts like a dog over a real dog any day.

So true.

I think people tend to greatly underestimate animal intelligence. We're so used to treating them like inferior beings that the idea that they are adaptable and capable of decision making (albeit not conscious) never occurs to us. People are so quick to forget that octopi can learn how to do new motor skills just by watching another octopus do something most animals can't do except primates and humans. Or that dogs can be seeing eye dogs, which takes an incredible amount of intelligence in the animal. Or that a gray parrot can understand the concept of zero. Or that elephants mourn their dead, or that dolphins and whales have names and communicate with each other verbally. Etc, etc,

Even the ants with limited cognitive function are capable of incredible organized feats, like ants.

People tend not to see that even though animals do not think the way we do, that they are still very intelligent.

What the two posters above me said.

Most of them are still godamn delicious though.

Also, on the subject of ants I've always been fascinated by 'hive mind' animals like ants and bees. They're sort of line one brain just split up into different, mobile peices when you think about it.

Some people need to think a certain way so that they can keep their sanity while eating meat.

Some think that they are completely inferior and have no feelings (emotional or physical).

Some understand that animals are intelligent and have feelings too, and emotion, and respect them, and choose to eat them.

And some are like above, but they can't stand the thought of eating them. Similar to how they would feel about eating a human.

You realise most plants have evolved to be eaten and consumed, right? Well, trees aren't meant to be cut down, but you get my point.

To be honest if plants had 'feelings' we're both so different they'd probably be feelings we couldn't comprehend or really have much grasp of.

Applying human aspects to something that inherently isn't human doesn't make much sense. Animals can be close to something which is human, so sometimes human aspects could potentially apply, but plants?

Nah.

That's prettymuch me.

I respect most animals and understand that a lot of them have intelligence, but you can't really convince me that something which is a major part of the way all organic species have evolved is morally wrong.

Still, humans are omnivores, so people are perfectly welcome to have the choice as to what they put into their mouth. I don't give a flying eff.
