Default Using the term MMO correctly. (and other terms)

Let me clarify MMO confusion using, In my opinion, the correct terms.

Common Acronyms for games.

MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online.
More than about 200 (which IMO is the BARE MINIMUM amount) players with the ability to see and interact with each other in a single persistent game environment. (Note: A chat lobby alone does not qualify a game to be an MMO)
Example:World of Warcraft, which is a MMORPG

OM (or MO) = Online Multiplayer (Multiplayer online)
The game is multiplayer with other players using the internet.
Example:Team Fortress 2, which is an OMFPS game. (with some RPG elements)

FPS = First Person Shooter
You take control of a character in first person, and shoot things, usually with guns.
Example:Call of Duty, which is an FPS game. (that can be played Multiplayer Online with some RPG elements)

RPG = Role Playing Game
You take control of a character and define what they are by choosing what their role is and how they use their role (Stats and Skills)
Example:Elder Scrolls, which is a RPG (with FPS elements)

RTS = Real Time Strategy
You control 1 or more units with set abilities and roles and use strategy to defeat you opponent, in Real Time.
Example:StarCraft II, which is a RTS game. (that can be played Multiplayer Online)

TBS = Turn Based Strategy
You control 1 or more units with set abilities and roles and use strategy to defeat you opponent, using a Turn based system (ether simultaneous turns, or one after the other)
Example:Chess, which is a TBS game. (which is also a board game and can be played Multiplayer Online)

BA = Battle Arena
You take control of 1 unit with set abilities and roles and try to defeat your opponent in an enclosed arena.
Example:League of Legends, which is an MOBA game.(that has RPG elements)

Sim = Simulator
You take control of something to simulate real life.
Example:Sim City, which is a City Simulation.

Fighter = Fighter
You take control of 1 person and "Fight" other people, while using multiple key presses to combo abilites together to help take out the enemy faster.
Example:Soul Caliber, which is a Fighter game (that can be played Online Multiplayer, and in the later games has some RPG elements)

H&S = Hack and Slash
You take control of 1 person and fight through many AI controlled enemies at once. Hence the term, Hack and Slash.
Example:Devil May Cry, which is a H&S game.
Example:Diablo II, Which is a, H&SRPG (That can be played Online Multiplayer)

Racing = Racing
You try to do objectives (like get to the finish line) faster than a set time.
Example:Need for Speed, which is a Racing game. (That can be played Online Multiplayer, (also if you stretch it you could consider it an RPG))

Putting the info together.

MMORPG (MMO + RPG) means you log on to a persistent world with a character that you define what role he plays, with the ability see and interact with many other players in a single game environment.

MMOFPS (MMO + FPS) means you log on to a persistent world with a character that you control in first person and shoot things, with the ability to see and interact with many other players in a single game environment.

OMFPS (OM + FPS) means you control a character in first person and shoot things with other players using the internet.

OMRPG (OM + RPG) means you control a character and define what they are by choosing what their role is and how they use their role with other players using the internet.

an MMO is an OM
But a OM is not always an MMO

an FPS can be an RPG
and an RPG can be an FPS

so

an MMORPG is an OMRPG
But an OMRPG is not always a MMORPG

an MMOFPS isan OMFPS
But an OMFPS is not always a MMOFPS

a FPS can be a RPG
and a RPG can be a FPS

anMMOFPS can be an MMORPG
and an MMORPG can be an MMOFPS

There are the facts.

Borderlands for example, is not an MMO since it doesnt have more than 100 players in one persistent world with the ability to see and interact with each other in a single game environment.
But, you can play the game Borderlands with other players using the internet.
And you take control of a character in first person, and shoot things while defining what they are by choosing what their role is and how they use their role.

So, Borderlands can be an OMFPS and an OMRPG or OMFPSRPG. (if you call it an OMFPSRPG than you have to much time on you hands )

If someone is using a term incorrectly, please direct them to this post. So in the future they can learn to properly label the game. It will help us understand exactly what type of game they are talking about.

i have to disagree with your last comment..borderlands i not a OMFPS..
its just a FPS with online and lan function...(its not build on the online mode)

a OMFPS would be TF2

Borderlands CAN BE and OMFPS. let me just edit the main post*

you have no idea how badly it was pissing me off. Every time i read people saying TF2 was an MMO, i wanted to punch them in the face. TF2 can sorta be a RPG since you pick between classes though, but that doesnt mean is an MMORPG...
Some people might even consider COD to be an RPG since you can make classes, and hey it can be, it just depends on how you look at it. BUT, i had to show people the difference between OM and MMO..

Well said. Too many people mark room based games or heavily instanced shit (like Vindictus) for MMO.

Shit's annoying as hell. Really wonder who the hell started calling all these room based multiplayer FPSs MMOs, and why the hell everyone started calling them that. same with those RTS games.
Just annoying as hell to read IMO. Probably because everytime i see a new FPS and it says MMOFPS, i think "Hey, maybe it's an actual MMOFPS like planetside". Only to be disappointed.

It may not be a sticky thread... but i will use this thread to help "educate" the lesser minded people out there.

Plus who knows, maybe a mod might look at this and feel it should be stickied.

Games like Vindictus are still persistent world despite being heavily instanced, therefore your statement is actually incorrect.
if you were talking about S4 League you would have made more sense.

Usually when you want to help others you don't attempt to belittle their intelligence for not knowing something. Also if it pisses you off so much, perhaps it's time to get a different hobby.

Sometimes the tone of what you read is different then to the tone that was typed up.
Im not so much as like Raging at my computer and flipping people on the internet (Ironic choice of words) the bird.
Im more pissed off in the fact that by how people use the term MMO now means that Every FPS ever made that has some sort of mulitiplayer must have been an MMO.. which is wrong..

And also, i consider Vindictus to be a MMORPG, with a Lobby Based Battle System.

(out of bordom and OCD, im spicing up the OP )
