In almost any case I find cycles to be a disgrace to literature.
Worthless pop pulp that exists for sales and has no story to tell. They always have disappointing endings. In short, they are the "porn" version of a story and compared to a real story they are quite worthless and a waste of time. |

@Ronin im curious, you find cycles to be a disgrace? what abt trilogies? or grrms A Song of Ice and Fire? or can i say you'd only read novels that come standalone yes? interesting. i guess you're right, but isnt that a little, i dunno, cynical.
@ShadowIm not saying eragon was good. it was a nice time killer, nothing worth rereading. i just have this thing when i start a series, i absolutely have to finish the series. anyways, what i hated was the sheer number of loose ends he didnt tie up. not to mention the meaningless pages in the book. honestly, half the pages could be taken out and it wouldnt make any difference to the story, just eloquent rambling. anyways, to go off topic a bit, i need a new book to read. or series. i read just abt everything, from sci fi to fantasy, fiction or non. i just need a good read. though i do favour crime novels. |

The kinda rule of thumb goes as follows:
If the thing was published in one go, ala Lord of the rings, I couldn't care less about how it is split. If it is not published as a complete piece, I do not do cliffhangers. That means, either each book stands on it's own and closes of a complete arc, which is rather common with books for children and young adults, I can see merit to that, as long as the books are good. Kids can't be strained with confronting them with new characters? Ok. Kids are showered with sequential fandom-masturbation? No go for me. Example: Friend of mine: Stephen King writes an ongoing epic! My reaction: Meh, pass. Fact: Books where crap, no loss. On another note: If it's labeled "fantasy" I am 60% less likely to consider reading it. Too many Authors who write fantasy don't have something to tell, they just think "I wana write a fantasy book. It better contain lot's of awesome fantasy stuffs... Now I just need some worthwhile plot to keep people on board; **** planing it out from front to back is annoying. I'll just make it a series. After that I can worry about the ending in like 3 years or so..." Essentially they have nothing to write, that is worth to be read. Last edited by Ronin; 11-12-2011 at 05:04 PM. |
