I agree with the Dune comment, that's a MUST read.

I've read a few of the stuff you guys are suggesting already. But keep them coming =] Looking in to a few of the books you've suggested and will hopefully have a chance to read them soon.

Specifically, I've read (of those suggested so far):
  • Dune Series
  • 1984
  • Ender's Game
  • Time Machine (fond memories of reading this waaaaaay back in grade school =]) and War of the Worlds
  • Hitchhikers
  • The Road (pretty amazing book)

Only a single Foundation series mention?

It's the series that beat Lord of the Rings for Best All-time Fiction Series. Seriously. Without Foundation, there would be no Dune, no Ender's Game (Card directly mentioned Foundation as being his biggest influence, and without that series there would be no Ender's Game), and so forth.

You don't get more influential and important and awesome sci-fi as the Foundation series.

To illustrate: I gave the first book to my dad, who read it, and then bought the whole series. I then got my brother to read the first book, who read the whole series (we had already bought.) And then he loaned the first book to a friend, who loved it so much that he went out and bought the whole series. I'm sure the cycle has continued since then.

I hated Hitchhiker's...

Also read Stephen King. He's not strictly Sci Fi but there are Sci Fi elements. Especially in The Dome.

Woah, woah, woah, buddy. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I think it's safe to say that Starship Troopers and the Forever War were, as a matter of calculated, scientific fact [and not opinion], the most influential, important, and definitely the most awesome. I do, however, respect your opinion, and your flawless taste in books.

I will admit, though, that I'm more partial to the military's side of the story when it comes to sci-fi.
