I’m looking for people’s experience with PvP in MMORPGs. If you’re the competitive sort who likes to play in PvP queues (hardcore ranked or casual) what brings you to PvP in an MMORPG? and what do you expect from the game developer to keep your experience vital?
I’m asking because the newest patch to SWtOR has caused a spark of an issue with world PvP in the game and many of the players believe that the biggest problem is due to faction imbalances. Since many games faction their players into two distinct groups, often one will be larger or harder hitting than the other and this has a direct effect on world PvP (where no balance is set) and sometimes on battleground PvP (where queues make certain the two sides have roughly equal teams.) If you play SWtOR, I’d love to hear how you feel about the new bugs. If you play any MMORPG with PvP world or battleground, I’d like to know your thoughts as well.

Wait a minute. You're the anthropologist, right?
Haha! Anyway, let me try to give you my thoughts on your question. I used to play Aika, which was a faction-based game (they're called Nations there). After a while, one nation starts to dominate and receive most of the buff relics. New players of course like all those buffs and join that nation, leaving the others underpopulated and unable to defend themselves. After a while, it became extremely difficult to have some semblance of "fair" nation wars (It's like, 200+ players vs your 32 players on the map) and it was frustrating. Stuff like that kinda ruins games that put high importance to PvP. I'd prefer PvP for fun though, like in Mythos where you just right-click a guy and challenge him. It's a Diablo 2-like game, so it's fun, especially when you can do it again and again. I got into PvP because I like using uncommon/rare builds to beat cookie-cutter PvP characters. Like, if the dominating class is a melee DPS, I'd try to beat it with a battle-hybrid healer class if it's feasible. It's kinda satisfying to use the correct strategy and successfully beat overpowered classes. |

Im odd. I tend to pvp for roleplay reasons. I have to trually despise my rival to pvp. So I would guess as a devolper. Id want you to give me reasons why I should pvp plot and rival wise. I dont pvp for gear although its nice to get a reward in the end. But usually my true reward is seeing my rival defeated at the end of the day.
Ive played everything but everquest. Mostly pvped in world of warcraft on horde side. I will at some point pvp on old republic.

I do WoW Rated Battlegrounds & Arena. I've been Gladiator about 5 times already, I'm currently sitting on 2400+ in Rated Battlegrounds with my team.
Raiding is boring to me because I hate killing things that are brain dead. I used to raid a lot in "The Burning Crusade" expansion but it died out on me when Wrath of the Lich King came out. I don't see how killing something that does the same thing every time is considered fun. I like the excitement of PVP, fighting other players because every fight is different, it requires strategies on the fly, so you have to constantly be on your toes. |

Thanks all for replying, sorry it's taken me so long to get around to actually reading (computer trouble -- ugly kind) but I'm glad to see so many people talking about PvP.
Yes, I'm the anthropologist. I'm sure I'll work my conversations in this subject into my research somehow. I figured I'd stop by and say thanks -- even though I've been sidelined. I'll be back to converse shortly, I hope.
