Seems like you don't move around enough. That is the first thing to learn. Wait for an opening. Don't attack unless you know it will hit. Maybe bait every now and then. Also it would help to play some of the other classes so you can see what they are working with. Or just fight more. Even if you lose you can learn something.
Another tip. Fight dirty. Do whatever you can to win. Within the game rules that is. Do your best to make it where the opponent can't fight back. Control space. Use mind games. Never give up. Even if you are about to die. But don't rush into things.
A less generic sounding tip is vs gunners. Try to stay above them.

Fighter is great! Gunners are made of paper. Mages are made of wet paper. All you need is one hit. Then combo to hell.
