I am looking for animes that will force me to think a lot about following questions:

"Do I agree with this idea?"
"Would I act in a similar manner?"
"Do I think this is ethically justifiable?"

Here are animes I've watched which I believe fall into this category:

Monster:
This anime asks who really is the monster, how much you are willing to forgive, whether some murders are justifiable, how much science should be allowed to sacrifice for the greater good, how important memories and a past are, etc.

Ergo Proxy:
It asks why you care for some beings and not for others, whether living in a illusion or in the reality is prefereble, why you choose to even live and not suicide, how you would act if you knew when/how you are dying, how much freedom you are prepared to give others, etc.

Death Note:
Asks how much are you willing to sacrifice in order to achieve your ideals, how much you care for others, the importance of discipline, whether some people are better off dead, how much you can rely on other people, how far I am willing to go to defend the law, etc.

In other words, it is not enough for an anime to have characters with a tragic past or setting. This is why I didn't enjoy Elfen Lied very much; it simply didn't cause me to think enough about the questions in my introduction.

So does anyone have any recommendations?
