Fact is, people want to feel like they are "good", so they act sympathetic toward randoms. I will wager money that hardly anyone feels legitimately sad about random death, so why even act like it?
Fake sympathy is worse than none. Selective sympathy even worse.

It's not about feeling "good" it's about showing respect for fellow humans that have died. It's natural to feel sad when you hear that some one has died because it could have been you or some one you loved. It does not make you a hard @ss to say you don't care about others and that their deaths don't make you feel a thing. It makes you sound heartless and unfeeling.
