Fact is, people want to feel like they are "good", so they act sympathetic toward randoms. I will wager money that hardly anyone feels legitimately sad about random death, so why even act like it?

Fake sympathy is worse than none. Selective sympathy even worse.
I'm not saying people have to go "Oh that's so sad" and weep over the loss of every death, what i'm saying is that people need to have respect for the dead - Saying that is like saying: "The terrorists from 9/11 are noobs, didn't practice enough with windows flight simulator imho.", because - by their logic, millions of people die every day, right? Why would it matter?
