Kari hurried thru the darkness, quietly stealing thru the night. An old, tattered leather book under her arm, her gold rings silently clanging against the binding. She was almost back to the main house with her prize. She let out a sigh of relief as she rounded the final corner of the maze, the bright light of her room in view. She extinguished the flame that followed her which she had used for light and crept quickly to the side of her room.

The bushes began to rearrange themselves as she silently commanded them to make way for her and become a stairway to her window. She agilely climbed, cringing as her skirt brushed along the side of the house noisely. The window unlatched, opening for her and closing behind her, clicking shut.

She let out another sigh of contentment. She had made it back home with her package from the Port Master. It was a book, a very important book. It told the history of the Gatekeepers. This was the most precious thing to her now. She smiled as the candle of her room flickered out, crawling into bed and igniting a few particles above her head so a small flame would hover just enough for her to read. She quietly opened book, the binding squeeking and a cloud of dust burst from the pages, blinding her momentarily. She sneezed, widening her eyes as she heard the creak of the stairs.

"no!" she mummbled, extingushing the flame quickly and hiding the book under her bed, coveirng her self and closing her eyes tightly. She kept her breathing steady, exagerrating the motion as the door opened quietly. There was a long pause before it shut. She waited a few moments, then tried to open her eyes. But she couldnt, sleep had overtaken her, and she didnt fight back.
