dude, having a gun doesnt deter people because they dont know youve got one. unless you have a sign on the front of your house or unless you walk around wearing it in a holster.... which im betting most people dont.
but if you have a society where everyone has a gun then criminals are more likely to use firearms themselves. this is a very bad situation because it means that petty crime or things like burglary, car theft, muggings and stuff like that suddenly become potentially alot more dangerous.
having a weapon doesnt make you less of a victim of crime. all it serves to do is raise the stakes and increase the likelihood of someone getting hurt or killed.
if nobody has weapons then criminals are far less likely to use weapons when committing crimes. more dangerous means of deterrence only lead to more dangerous means of attack, its a cycle which is ultimately self destructive.
the only reason that the united states hasnt learnt this yet despite it being a civilized member of the western world is because the right to bear arms is enshrined in the constitution and in the american way of life.
