Stone moved from the shadow of the door and slowly moved the barrel of his gun close to the back of Shephard's head.
In a calm voice, he said "I've no doubt that a deputy will be here shortly. Till that happens, I'd suggest you put your gun down and move towards the crowd."
Using the periphery of his vision, he shouted towards the girl, "You! Girl! Kick that gun away and keep your hands out in the open. I've never killed a child before but there is a first time for everything."
He hoped the others did as they were told. Why the hell hadn't he gone for a drink when he had the chance.
