Okay, I've finished the final boss like 3 times now in an attempt to get the ending. To save time I've simply recorded it . But no matter how many times I play the video, I don't understand it.

Rinoa comes out of the gloom.
She finds squall lying on the ground dead.
She cries and a massive beam of light shoots into the air and it plays the rest of it with Balamb Garden flying over character doing things.
Rolls credits, plays the funny thing where you finaly get to see zell eating a hotdog.
After credits it shows the balamb garden floating along.
Rinoa looks out over the balcony. She does that thing where she puts her finger up.
Camera spins around and it's Squall.
My avatar gives away the rest .

So what, is squall dead, is he alive or is that just a memory of squall inside Rinoas head?

Squall is alive. Wouldn't be the same for FF to have their heros killd off. I mean look at FF: Tactics. The characters had said that Ramza and co had died. Yet as the credits are rolling it shows Ramza and Alma rideing Chocobo's through a forest and stuff.

So in the end it's up to you. What do you truely think happened? Personally I rest that the heros all survived. I mean look at Squall. They tossed him into Kingdom Hearts and stated it occured after FFVIII was over. Course Rinoa isnt with him. So either his world was destroy'd or he died and was reborn there. Course Kingdom Hearts really loves to screw with our heads. It's like the 'what if' thing if the FF characters and Disney met up.

Yeah, Kingdom Hearts just made me confused with all the Final Fantasy series. I'll just go with Squall died. When we see Rinoa with Squall at the end, its just the imagination of Rinoa. When the FF characters die for a "Noble" cause they get reborn into Kingdom Hearts. Squall died to save the world. Aries, erm Arieth died to save the world, Auren was already dead, he helped save the world. Uh... Yuffie killed herself. Sepheroth was saving the world from the beginning. Hades brought Cloud back to life... uh... yeah.

The Kingdom Hearts storyline has no link whatsoever to any of the 'Final Fantasy' titles. The characters are only there as 'guest' characters- it does not reflect what they were, are, or will be, in their respective titles at all.

well, its been a while since i clocked FF8, and as far as i remember, my understanding of the ending was squall gets lost in time basically. The time compression the sorceress was attempting (ultimecia was it?) got squall lost in between different ages, but then he remembered about the promise with rinoa about how he'd alwasy be in that field next to the orphanage(ties to the opening cinematic where rinoa is waiting for him) and somehow went there and found rinoa. He is saved and they somehow return to their own time frame, then the gang lives happily ever after...one of the more confusing ff endings..

ps: played kingdom hearts for a few hours..saw how they butchered the final fantasy characters, and made donald duck a 'mage'...dumped the cd somewhere...i hate kingdom hearts

Also you must remember that Squall never showed compasion, he always kept it locked up because he was afraid to let it go because of his sis (elly). Any ways he always felt he couldn't let his emotions go and in the end he finally shows all his true feelings. + all of what everyone above said.

At the ending it may look like Squall died but where? Ive never saw those lands and Squall problally didnt die because you still are in the future of Ultimecia, who knows

Its what the people of squaresoft wants you to do. Its up to you what ending you think. Its like FFX. In the end tidus and auron disappeared. Then, after a while, tidus is swimming somewhere (right?) I know thats the ending. But when X2 came out, I didnt like to play it cause...your only 3...
