It all depends.
Some games cost 800 points, give or take. Some cost 1,200 or so.
I'm pretty sure you can use Marketplace without a Gold account. I wouldn't know, I have a Gold account. Basically, you buy a card, type in the redeemable code and it just adds the points. Then you go download whatever you wish.
