The combination of the fire (which feeds on the air) and earth (which weighs against air pressure) would allow the rocky, flaming ball to gather speed and land in the desired location. Thus, it would be like shooting cannons at the vans, not fire; that has more impact than what I believe you believe to be simply flames that spread across the road around the vans. Cannons are more tangible than fire, which, again, is what most represents the fireballs covered in a crust-like material (earth).
Therefore, even if the fire/earth "cannons" don't directly hurt the vans, it could eventually cause enough damage to swerve the cars off the road. ))
