I'm pretty sure ambien falls under the dissociative category of psychoactive drugs.
In other words, you ARE hallucinating (even if you THINK you aren't seeing anything). Hallucinations brought on by ambien would be perceived as something real, and not usually accepted by the brain as a hallucination. So...you "get scared and freaked out" because you ARE seeing things, but can't rationalize them in your mind.
Like I said...not really enjoyable :/
