Yea, I know what you mean but I’m not really saying that I’m grading someone on how good or bad their grammar is. There is a fine line between attempting to type like a mature adult and typing like a child. I have respect for people who try. Usually, people who try in one place show the same trait in the other things that they do. I do understand what you mean though and I will learn from it so thanks for posting.

anyway, i don't think its really fair that you guys talk about kids who don't have good grammar. I try to have good grammar, buts it's hard. Plus, sometimes I just don't want to act what you call "grown up". I just don't really think that you should judge someone based on their grammar, but on what they have to say. (although i will agree that 1337-speak gets really annoying). It just kinda makes me sad, seeing that people care so much about grammer.

Anyway, @pb_destiny: you're one of the only people here that reply with a lot of info, aren't you . Lol, thanks for helping him out, but I don't think he has a background in python, since he said that he was going to learn python if he can't understand C++.

You can set up a server with a router, yes. First you need to set up your router to forward incoming connections on whatever port you're using to your local IP.

Ahh! What a life.

School keeping me from C++. So much homework is driving it mad. Maybe it'll cool down a bit, I dunno, but just a question on scheduling.

1.) How much time is good to put in one day? (I.E 1 hour a day C++, etc.)

Well basically, because your programming is only a side project of self-education, and cant get you very far if you plan to take your education past high school to post-secondary, I'd say make sure you put your homework/studies first priority.

Now if you have other plans that night after completing your homework/school studies, than I suggest you put some time aside for programming.

I'd say spare at least an hour for each part, meaning read a lesson/chapter and dedicating about an hour to the study of it. Some concepts you may grab fast, while others may require further studying, and reading over the lesson again is one of the best ways to learn something if you don’t understand it. I would than say put about an hour's worth of time dedicated to doing the exercises, and than put together what you've learn in that chapter (and even previous chapters) to create your own little project of your own. Make sure you plan it well, that way you can make a worthwhile accomplishment when finally complete the planned, personal exercise and you will know the lesson inside and out.

Basically that sums up about two hours, I know it seems lot but time goes by fast when you really get into programming, keep in mind that following the exercises and working on your own is what makes programming really fun because it’s like problem solving for a puzzle that you built. I found that’s when I learned the most, that’s what kept me dedicated to continue learning, and reminded me why I want to learn to program. Also take note that you may finish a whole lesson/chapter (exercise and all) before the two hours you assigned for it. I wouldn’t recommend it, but you may be able to go on and read another lesson if your mind is capable of it, I know mine isn’t. I know the best way to unwind after studying programming is to either play games to remind you what you want to work for, get involved in a favorite hobby/pastime, or just hang out with friends and continue with later plans earlier for that day.

I hope this sums it up, if you have anything that needs clarification make sure you post it in a response,

Good Luck,

-PB

*Side Note* To all those who may have a high opinion of me as being this experienced game developer, I'll finally let you in on my little secret I've had since I have been here at onrpg. Lets just say ScottC and Eriond are probably the most experienced/skilled programmers here along with TLM, at least the most active members.

...I am still studying C++, along with SDL/OpenGL now, and have never released a major project or original game that was worth doing so. I'm still an amateur like all of you, I know enough about the process of learning/explaining/creating games that I can I explain to many others what you shouldn’t attempt and must know/need to learn before proceeding, and what you'll really need in order to prepared and able to take on realistic goals.

The best part about this whole situation is that it’s ok for me to be at this level, over the time I have been here; I have supplied lots of nice/accurate/useful information to a large population of members. I also know that this experience/goal of mine simply prepares me and gives a me head start in game development, and at the same time it's a passion of mine that I couldn’t enjoy more than to learn it now. I'm graduating this year, and I start my Computer Science and Technology Course in September 2007 (three year college course), and this will teach me many types of programming, and allow a path in the future education to Computer Science (Bachelor’s Degree) were I can simply transfer to the course and complete it in a single year. At the same time, even while I'm in college, I plan to follow my own personal goals I have set in projects that I have been preparing for and designing with improvements/details as I learn more along the way. I don’t plan to accomplish all of these goals and complete all the games I have planned out to do (mostly simple games for working up to harder development difficulty as I learn more/gain experience) before or during college but I believe it’s good to have something to work towards and leave as important goal. I believe its good to build a profile of projects, even learn to create your own personal website/hire someone to build one, one which will include things like a resume, experience, projects you’ve worked on, people you’ve have worked with, your experiences over the past few years with both job related and computer/technology , ECT. Overall I am very optimistic of my future and I'm not scared to take on any of the tasks in order to achieve my dream goal and career, I hope that other members of the forum can understand this, and maybe even share some goals with me.

I think there is a brief distinction that must be drawn between people who don't have good grammar, and people who simply don't try. I, personally, do not have particularly high standards for knowing grammar, but it is clear when someone is trying or not. That they are trying to use correct grammar actually points out a considerably significant characteristic of a good game developer; that they use what knowledge they have and work on improving from there. All aspects of game development stem mostly from practice, and to at least make good attempts at using correct grammar shows a good work ethic. Is this always true? No, I would not generalize, but it is nevertheless a strong hint.

PB, an excellent teacher as always (regardless of skill in programming: do you honestly thing I know crap about theoretical composition whenever I critique music beyond basic harmony?), has offered excellent answers, in realms that I couldn't even scratch the surface of, so I'll pretty much leave my participation in this thread to just this post unless something else comes up that I can help with.

For the sake of humanity, do keep up your excellent attitude. Your ego (not to say you have a large one, but we all have ego to some degree or another) and desire to learn will grapple for quite some time, so just be sure to ask questions where there is knowledge to be gained, and offer help where possible, and above all just keep practicing the good policies already detailed in this thread.
