Ok I've decided to ask all of you guys to post the definitions of anything related to game dev. Such as Graphics and programming etc. this is because everytime I saw a definition/explanation in a book or tutorial I didn't understand anything so I hope you guys can explain in an understandable way. Thanks to all of you guys in advance!

That is an impossible task for the amount of active members in these forums, second of all the definitions for terms may not be correct or may contain inaccuracies. I think that this is more for your benefit because you are too lazy to use Google, and there is another reason why most people here would agree with me, here it is:
GameDev.Net's Dictionary Hope that clears things up for, -PB

Thx for the reply but it's not because I'm lazy (I tried google) but I thought it would also be helpful for other newbie ppl who want to make a game but thx anyways...
P.S. I wasn't thinking of EVERYTHING related to programming or Graphics etc but the general description of it. For example: Graphics- The images placed in a game, may it be 2D or 3D, to create these graphics you need a modeler if 3D or simply Paint for 2D. Last edited by JudgementXD; 09-10-2006 at 05:06 PM. |

Possibly, but I've noticed the majority of users that participate on the forum are usually part of these three categories:
(1) First time developers, or wannabe dev's who believe playing games is similiar experinece and type of entertainment. A lot of these people come to create only a single topic for their own benefit and/or project, and usually give little activity back to the community. In most cases a lot visitors/single post members choose to ignore the already stickied information and rules, many of which answer the questions they post or may benefit them in some way. Another sticky dedicated to terms/definitions may get some attention and may be read, but the majority of people that find the active stickies in our community, do so through search engines. (2) People who are truly interested in the idea of game developing, and are usually here to gather information from personal insight and/or research among the players of games. These people are in most cases, capable of retrieving such information on the terminology and processes on their own. (3) People who join the community for a short period of time whose range of activity is from monthly to weekly. These people either have some background knowledge and experience that is accurate, or they are still learning themselves and trying to gain something from participating in the community. I’ve been apart of Onrpg for well over a year and a half now, and I’ve only witnessed a handful of actual experienced and active developers continue to stay here for a short period of time. You’ll find the majority of active/long term members in the most popular/updated/longest running game forums of onrpg and in the general discussion section. I hope that this has given you some insight, -PB

Meh guess I'm in the first category then huh?
. But not for long as I've asked my dad if I could join some programming classes and he said we'de go see a school that teaches that. So possibly in the future I'll be able to help out as well but in the mean time I'll keep using online tuts. Anyways I'de just like to say that your posts are very educational and so are the rest of the active members of the Game Dev. forum such as Eriond and TLM.P.S. You do know that I have been on Onrpg for just over a year don't you? O.o |

I wouldn’t say you meet any of those categories, which isn’t a bad thing as I stated the majority of users. It just means you are on a different route to learning/discussing/understanding the principles and concepts of game development.
Well it’s nice to hear your father supports your education into programming and is willing to set you up with some courses. My parents know little about my current progress and like it that way. I've been self-educating myself with my own book and online tutorials, along with other free resources and help from others, especially on the GameDev.Net Community. I would recommend you take an overview of the material, or experiment with a few free tutorials, in order to get a better understanding of whether or not you willing to commit some time to these courses you may enter. *Side Note* Does the phrase "have been on Onrpg for just over a year" mean about seven months more correctly? Not that its important how long you've been here but that’s about as long I've notice you participating, but its nice to see members from the previous onrpg forums here. Anyways I'm glad you find some of my postings/responses worthwhile and I'm planning on remaining active on this community for a while, I'm hear daily and usually hover around the boards in the evening depending on kind of activity I expect each day. See you around Onrpg, -PB

Glad that you'll be here pb, since you help everyone out a lot ^_^. Me, im just an amatuer at all this, so i browse onRPG a lot, maybe on differrent account, but I'm very active. I just help people in the "maplestory section" since i know the basics of MS. Then, i lurk around general, reading, and just giving out my oponions. I guess for the game dev section, im just a person who asks questions, but can't help anyone out, since i know know much.
But, if i do know anything, I'm willing to help any other people out ^_^. |

When I say that I've been on onrpg for just over a year I'm counting the old forums and the laziness of me which couldn't be bothered to register again till May
. Anyways Piggy Bank seems we're on the same lvl huh? Anyways good to hear you'll stick around pb =P.
