FlyFF is "free to play", and contrary to some other games with cash shop they actually made it possible to play without cash shop items.
Cash shop is mostly for looks --- items that have no practical value and just change the appearance of your character. There's a few "powerups" that I don't think anyone uses (like cash shop food), and a bit of stuff that is commonly traded for ingame currency as well (restat and spro scroll come to mind). So far, I have no cash shop items and none of my gear pieces is byeond +3 (upgrading higher is where spro scroll come into play --- for +4 and beyond the item is lost when the upgrade fails, unless you used a spro scroll). Still, shineglasses would be nice to have :-) I'll have to see what the stuff costs ingame...

You can see some of the cash shop clothing frequently ingame, and there's a good demand for Sprotect and Restat scrolls. Some people use the cash shop to "buy" penya (buy items with good demand in cash shop and sell them for penya).
Of course, Scammers are primarily interested in getting cash shop items as well... The Sylia Bike that was recently in the cash shop as a "limited time offer" actually sold for far more than the usual "gpotato<->penya" rate; I suppose that's because it's very expensive (6900 gpotato), and on the website it actually looked good :-) People still have to be willing to pay that much money just to get a flying device or penya --- it's nice to have several hundert million penya, but there's also a limit to how much real money people want to invest for mere game money. It's basically the same for me: I will, eventually, get some cash shop clothing. I will not, however, pay $$$ for it. I don't have a problem with people making penya that way, though, and I even think it's better than professional farmers.

f2p / cash shop is the future. i can only imagine how much they make. ive alone spent hundreds on the game. just for the hell of it. atleast cash shop, you get to enjoy the money you spent, not just enjoy the same game you would normally get to play, even if you didnt pay.
