Guild Wars - Prophecies, Guild Wars - Factions and Guild Wars - Nightfall are all stand alone games, though, if you so choose, can take your characters from Prophecies and play them in Factions and Nightfall. Further more, they do not come out every month, more so every 6 months to a year (I think factions took a year, Nightfall isn't out yet I don't think, but will be a little bit more than 6 months?), and it's not required you buy all of them to fully enjoy the game. I bought Prophecies the day it came out, and still have fun with it to this day.

Also, some people are more or less retarded and claim Guild Wars is a horrible grind, as you gain nearly no XP from monsters. The game is quest based and story driven (this is kind of funny, because a big part of the story will involve you destroying a horde of charr or something, and if you come to the map again, they'll be there again.) so you gain almost all of your experience from questing.
