Default Reputation

I believe that Reputation can be a great tool to show how active, or helpful a member is. Unfortunately, the current system contains many flaws.
One is that only people in the General section would get "repped" by mods. This generally excludes anyone else on this forum whether they be helpful or not. For an average member to rep, he or she must obtain 350 rep or so beforehand. This is a very difficult amount of rep to achieve, especially for those that do not consistently post in the General section. I believe that other sections should have this privelige as well.

Examples found in:
http://www.onrpg.com/boards/reputation-change-27192-8/ (Reputation Change!)
We've had many ideas in the topic, but they have been ignored and the topic has died before a single mod can express if they accept the ideas or not. Here are some ideas give by the people of onrpg:

It's not like only Olaph and Xeno will be able to give them out.

Rep should be a function all people should have access to. At a previous forum, I visited, everyone had the ability to rep and it was a function everyone enjoyed. If you agree with someone, you rep. If you dislike the person's attitude, you lower rep.
Ultimately, all people should be able to use it instead of not allowing anyone else use the function until 350 (hello, 1 rep at a time? At least lower it to 11 or something )

So this allows those that are in sections where mods are not as active to be able to get repping power.
Of course the post count will no longer be shown when a person posts so that people won't judge by that anymore.
And if the post count part doesn't sound too good, you could check the join date. Instead of reaching 1000 post count, you could say that if someone was active, didn't spam, no warning etc, and stayed at onrpg for a certain amount of time can have repping power.

I've just came up with these ideas because someone on the pervious page or so said something about certain sections where mods do not see posters often and probably won't get repped as much.

A solution to our problem is letting every member rep eachother. This will make the use of it very loose and be used as more of a social purpose than as some great reward for making a mod feel good about himself.

Another idea that I had was that everyone could rep others, but only members who have a certain amount of rep can take rep away.

That way, I don't think it'll be very easy to abuse the rep system, because only the mods and few members with a lot of rep could take rep away. However, in the future there might need to be some changes added, but at the moment, I think allowing people to add rep is a good idea.

Good suggestions, all.

I try to be as active as possible in the MapleStory section, but I'm trying to get on a good schedule (going to sleep at 8, waking up at 70) so I'm not online when the forums are active most.

I am currently trying to give out as much rep as possible, but it IS hard because I don't look into every single thread. If you see a good post, guys, just send me a PM saying "Hey, dude, this is a good post, I think he deserves some rep," along with a link.

I also believe that 350 rep limit to be able to rep someone is a bit much. I wish it were more like 100, but hey, I'm not an admin.

I'll also be sure to post a link to this in the Staff's Corner. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

In addition, we have many plans for the rep system, but those are confidintial for the time being. However, for these ideas to work, it requires the rep-giving system to be Moderator only. Continuing, the reason we don't have the rep-giving system open to all members is because abuse. We don't want spammers going "GIVE ME REP" to gain access to these ideas we are currently working out. With the dreadful state of the maturity of this site, the average member simply can't be trusted. Hence the 350 rep part. (I'll repeat myself, it is too large of a number.)

I think this whole "have to have this amount to rep someone" was pretty silly in the first place

Why not just let people rep from the start? Give moderators a lot more repping power than normal members, and the bad people will filter out eventually. When the best posters get lots of rep, they will know how to use it responsibley and reward good posters.

Do we even have negative rep? Can negative rep ban someone?
