Default Why Christmas?

This is not a racist thread.

I just don't understand why some people of other religion celebrate Christmas. Some don't even understand what is Christmas. Do you go around to other people birthday party without even knowing them?

Tell me why you celebrate Christmas.......

Buddhism is more of a philosophy rather than a religion.

Anywho, i celebrate christmas because i can.

Also, religions are not races.

Nice, a fellow Buddhist. And I'm not fully sure of what the meaning of Christmas is. But if it's getting together with family and friends, giving gifts just for the heck of it, and enjoying life, I've been doing a damn good job every year.

Christmas is pretty much a secular holiday. Hell, it's not even the birthday of Jesus (He was born in March, I think, or so they've figured out now). December 25th was actually the old pagan solstice festival, when the ancient romans celebrated the return of the sun (The actual solstice is the 21st, but close enough). When Rome converted en masse to christianity, they needed to abosrb the old holy day, so they put a new one ontop of it.

Christmas trees? Santa Claus? That has nothing to do with Jesus. Christmas is totally secular, doesn't really have anything to do with religion anymore, it's all about spending time together, and giving gifts. Hell, it's nice to have time off. I'm an atheist, and I love christmas.

Christmas trees were like a sign of good luck or something. I can't remember. It seems like every thing in life that doesn't make sense seems to be a sign of good luck. Santa Claus is Saint Nicolas who was a real guy that made tools and distributed them through the village.

ya i agree christianity isnt a race, its a religion. im azn and i am christian. and u dont see me celebrating hannukah. lolz jk.

@eriond

where did u get all that information?

im guessing that in america, the majority is christian, but there are still a lot of non christians, so if ur like a teacher, u cant play christmas carols in class, or say "merry christmas!" u have to say happy holidays. and the gigantic break in december is now called "winter break" instead of "christmas break", even though theres obviously a break because its christmas :P
